We are proud to have a great and diverse team of sustainability professionals supporting our activities with their expert knowledge. This is why we want to introduce them to our GreenBuzz community and share their sustainability insights with you! First on the list is John Duncan, our topic lead for Plastics & Marine Stewardship and a long-term marine conservationist working for the WWF. We asked him the following questions:

Why did you choose to join the GreenBuzz Zurich team and what role do you play within the organisation?

I joined the Greenbuzz team because I wanted to hang out with like-minded and interesting people doing interesting things. As a long-term marine conservationist, my role is to bring interesting topics to the table around important marine issues such as plastic pollution and sustainable fisheries.

In your opinion, what do you see as the biggest challenge for sustainability within your industry?

The biggest challenge facing the transition to a circular plastic economy is lack of transparent reporting on plastic production and use. We need much more accountability in the system from all of the players but we don’t currently have enough information at every level.

What is a positive development within your industry with regards to sustainability (either a solution to the above-mentioned challenge or a future outlook towards positive change)?

The growing focus on developing reuse systems which can reduce the need for single use packaging while at the same time not reducing convenience. This is a very exciting space to work in and it’s fascinating to see how rapidly innovation is happening.

We cannot wait to discuss these challenges and solutions at our events next year! Stay tuned for more introductions and event announcements.
