Meet Taeun Kwon, our Topic Lead for Sustainable Finance. Taeun is the Head of Wealth Manager Programs at the Center for Sustainable Finance and Private Wealth at the University of Zurich. At GreenBuzz she leads our sustainable finance topics team.
Why did you choose to join the GreenBuzz Zurich team and what role do you play within the organisation?
I joined the team because I wanted to connect with people interested or working on sustainability topics outside of the finance sector, but also connect sustainable finance experts with other sectors as well. I believe the finance sector has a critical role to play, and despite everyone’s belief, it is trying.
In your opinion, what do you see as the biggest challenge for sustainability within your industry?
The finance sector has long attracted a certain profile of people and has been dominated by the so-called pale, male, and stale. The belief that business as usual is the only way to do things to protect profit and steer away from risk held by this group of people, and the fact that any other group is either disregarded or not interested in finance to challenge this is perhaps the biggest challenge.
And on a more optimistic note, what is a positive development within your industry with regards to sustainability (either a solution to the above-mentioned challenge or a future outlook towards positive change)?
There is an awakening within the industry, especially facing the many crises and big recent events, that sustainability issues cannot be further ignored and have direct financial implications. I see increasing diversity in talent, pressure from the regulator, and interest from clients and investors that drives finance further towards sustainability.
