The Paris Climate Agreement has had a profound impact on the financial services industry. The European Commission calls for a climate-neutral Europe by 2050 (an economy with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions) and has issued a new sustainable finance regulation, which will become effective as of July 2020.
This transition to a climate-neutral society is both an urgent challenge and an opportunity to build a better future for us all. Considering the worldwide importance of the European financial centres, sustainable finance measures adopted by the EU will not only affect EU-based institutions, but also those incorporated outside the EU serving or seeking to serve European clients. This means that Swiss players also have to comply with these sustainable finance regulation standards, and they have the potential to lead the way with contributing towards achieving these sustainability goals.
Greenbuzz brings together experts in the area to inform us on how these new legislative measures will affect how we conduct business in four main ways:
- EU Sustainability Taxonomy
- EU Ecolabel for Financial Products
- EU Climate Transition and Paris-Aligned Benchmarks
- EU Regulation on Sustainability-Related disclosures in the financial services sector
“Europe’s financial sector must lead the green transition and make our Union the global destination for sustainable investment. There is no greater return on investment than a healthy planet and economy.”
– Jean-Claude Juncker (22.03.2018) at High-Level Conference on sustainable finance
