Covid-19 has shed light on how tourism needs to transition to more sustainable practices in order to survive.
The travel and tourism industry is accountable for 10,4% of global GDP, 8% of global CO2 emissions and 10% of global employment (World Travel and Tourism Council, 2019). It is one of the largest sectors worldwide with consumers growing by 2-3% per annum, while sustainable tourism is forecasted to grow by 24% per annum until 2030. Covid-19 has emphasized the importance of travel and tourism to many economies but also the volatility of the business.
Covid-19 has led the sector to respond quickly to meet consumer expectation and legislation. Understanding the fundamental changes that need to be implemented will be critical in ensuring longevity and creating positive impact within the industry.
In addition to being a supplier-dominated sector, its numerous stakeholders lead to a great deal of complexity: How is the industry looking at the future and what is being done to address the necessary shifts to stay within the planetary boundaries?
